Missing Gum Tissue

Recession occurs when the gums and the bone in the mouth have moved away from the tooth. Receding gums are caused from gum disease, trauma, position of the tooth in the mouth, or even hard tooth brushing. When this occurs, the body loses a natural defense against bacterial penetration and trauma.

Since the teeth and supporting structures have the ability to adapt, a person may not even realize that the gum recession is happening until there is increased sensitivity or an unsightly appearance associated with the teeth. However, since gum recession exposes the roots of the teeth, the teeth can become highly sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, and/or air flow.

Gum recession exposes the softer areas of the tooth and may make you more prone to cavities on the root surface (a large reason for tooth loss).
